Other Characters: Wasp

Name: Airazor
From: Beast Wars
Appearance: Root mode and beast mode (obviously, she’s the bird.)
Age: Robot ages are so subjective…I’d probably peg her in a late twenties/early thirties age bracket, talking human terms.
Gender: Female

Personality: Airazor is, in a word, independent. She doesn’t generally rely on any one to get her out of jams, instead using her own wits to keep out of trouble. She’s practical, capable and intelligent, though an underlying sense of adventure sometimes gets her in trouble – her desire for adventure is what got her involved in the beast wars in the first place.

She’s something of a subtle tease and a little bit of a flirt, though the latter is usually saved for her partner, Tigatron. A great example of this personality trait is when she and Tigatron first met on Cybertron and she told him he “might be able to persuade [her]” to loan him her ship. Her sense of humor is a bit subtle and dry as well, though she’s quick to smile.

Airazor is self-assured, but not a show off. She’s confident in her abilities and her place on the team, so she doesn’t go out of her way to receive praise or earn respect – she knows she already has it. She does sometimes posture in the face of a weak threat (ie: Waspinator), but doesn’t let her prowess as either soldier or scout go to her head.

She is a generally calm, composed individual who doesn’t let her emotions get the better of her. She doesn’t ruffle easily, even during battle, and has a healthy amount of common sense.

She is as loyal as they come, willing to do what it takes to help her team. Battle doesn’t intimidate her and she doesn’t back down quickly. Her teammates and the Maximal cause are important to her and she will soldier on, sometimes putting herself in the line of fire or taking a shot for an injured comrade, such as an occasion where she comes between a missile fired by Megatron and Optimus in order to keep Optimus safe, though she winds up badly damaged in the process.

Backstory: Her story began on Cybertron, where she served as the pilot of the ship Chromia 10. What exactly the Chromia 10 did is largely unknown. However, when the message got out that a band of Predacons had stolen a valuable artifact known as the Golden Disk, Chromia 10 was commandeered by Maximal Command Security Force member Unit 2, she volunteered to go along on the mission to bring the Predacons in rather than surrender her ship.

This turned out to be a bad move; in the ensuing chase the Chromia 10 was damaged, nearly destroying her and Unit 2 in the process. Their sparks were rescued by the crew of the original ship pursuing the Predacons, the Axalon, and placed in stasis pods. This saved both their lives, but caused seemingly irreversible damage to their core mainframes.

Just before the Axalon crash landed on prehistoric Earth, all of the stasis pods in the cargo hold were ejected, left to orbit the then-unknown planet. Some of them eventually crashed, causing the pods to activate and online the protoform within. Upon making planet fall, her stasis pod was damaged, putting her at great risk. She was rescued by the quick thinking of Rhinox and Cheetor, the former of who repaired her pod using a part donated by Cheetor.

After her pod’s initial activation, the scanner deemed a peregrine falcon to be a suitable alt mode and thus the Maximal now known as Airazor was “born.” She jumped right into the fray after emerging from her pod, charging right into a battle against Predacon flyer Terrorsaur – a battle in which she was the victor and Terrorsaur was left in pieces.

At that time, the only other flyer among the Maximal crew was Optimus Primal, the ragtag team’s leader. This put her in the unique position of being the Maximals’ main air force and because she was able to cover greater distances in shorter time without obstacles like trees, mountains and rivers getting in the way, Airazor became the team’s scout.

Also at that time, Airazor was reacquainted with Unit 2, who was then going by the designation Tigatron. She was interested in him right from the start, though he was more interested in solitude and nature. However, the two were paired up on scouting missions quite often and eventually, a mutual attraction developed between the two.

During her tenure with the Maximal crew of the Axalon, Airazor was privy to many adventures, such as the discovery of a giant flying island riddled with booby traps that activated whenever any one fired a weapon. During that escapade, Airazor was injured rescuing Tigatron from the Predacons, but he came to her aid and the two further explored the island, which was later destroyed. Her next grand adventure came during the course of events that lead to Inferno being onlined, which resulted yet again in her and Tigatron saving each other’s afts.

Shortly after that, Airazor saved the day when she was one of only two Maximals to not be stuck in her beast mode and she retrieved an important component of the Axalon that was stolen by the Predacons. Further adventures involved swooping in as reinforcements against a Starscream-possessed Waspinator, and being used as a decoy to distract Megatron from Tigatron sneaking onto the Predacon’s ship during a truce.

The biggest escapade of Airazor’s life began to unfold shortly after the aliens responsible for the flying island arrived on Earth and created a strange, dome-like structure. While investigating the structure with Ratrap, Airazor was captured by the dome itself and tortured. She was rescued by Primal, who offered to take her place, which the aliens deemed acceptable. The structure self-destructed shortly thereafter, sending both the Predacons and Maximals running.

This was only the start of the aliens’ plans for Earth, however, as revealed when one of the planet’s two moons turned out to be an alien weapon of mass destruction destined to destroy their Earth experiment after it was “contaminated” by the Cybertronians.

During the ensuing chaos preparing for doom, Airazor and Ratrap found the Predacon spider, Blackarachnia, tinkering with a stasis pod in the Axalon’s hold. Primal commandeered the pod, destroyed the alien weapon, and wound up offlining himself in the process.

After that tragedy, life resumed as normally as it could. Airazor and Tigatron returned to their scouting missions, searching for downed stasis pods. It was during one such mission that the duo met their ultimate fate when they stumbled upon a valley lush with plant life.

The two were in the midst of a tender, romantic moment when the plant –which was not really a plant at all, but another alien device- ensnared them in vines. Amidst a profession of undying love, the two were kidnapped, never to be seen again…

Or were they?

Moral Standing: Good
Dreams: She doesn’t long for adventure so much these days, after her frightening experiences with the Vok aliens. Mostly, she dreams of blue skies and creating some kind of peaceful existence with Tigatron.
Fears: Not much. She’s pretty level-headed, though she probably does have a healthy amount of fear of alien life, after the couple times the Vok got their non-existent hands on her.
Extra: Whether in root mode or beast mode, Airazor’s eyesight is incredibly sharp.

Due to their role in her initial repairs after crashing on Earth, Airazor looks at Cheetor as a sort of brother-figure and Rhinox as an elder male family member something akin to an uncle.

No one seems to go out of their way to flirt with her or make a big thing about her being a femme. This may be because she’s already taken up with Tigatron by, like, her second episode or because she’s a bit of a tomboy. Either way, the Maximals and Predacons alike treat her like one of the guys. Her frame design is not overly feminine and she’s too sensible to play up her gender, though she does occasionally turn on the girly charm when alone with Tigatron.

Airazor and Tigatron’s attraction to one another seems to be a bit instantaneous; they’re portrayed as romantic partners pretty early on after Airazor’s arrival on Earth. There’s a hint of attraction between them in the prequel comic as well, though they’ve just met in the beginning of said comic. They do share a mutual love of nature and the beauty of Earth, both considering Earth their home, rather than Cybertron. Their feelings for each other are quite strong, with both of them vowing to follow each other even after death, though Tigatron values his solitude and Airazor can handle herself perfectly well in his absence.

The Beast Wars characters are considerably smaller than the Autobots and Decepticons of G1, due to downsizing of frame size after the Great War. The Maximals tend to run smaller than the Predacons and Airazor is one of the smallest Maximals.

Writing Sample:

Stranger things have happened.

It’s the first thought that crosses her mind when she regains consciousness.

They must have.

But here, floating, weightless and numb, she can’t imagine anything more surreal than this.

She feels like she is everywhere and nowhere, all at the same time. As if her body has fallen away, leaving her spark as raw and new as the day she onlined on Earth. But that’s impossible, isn’t it? How can she exist here, without a shell?

Her practical side says it’s not possible.

And here, where everything is liquid-smooth, time slows to a crawl and she has nothing to do but think.

She wonders where the aliens have taken here; if Tigatron is there too. What was the plan for them all along, and had she been intended for this state of suspended animation from the first time they had captured her? Will they be freed or offlined? Here in this non-place of light and nothingness, anything seems possible and for the first time in a long time she is scared.

But more than that, she is mad; rip roaring mad! Not that she’d want any of her friends to be in her position, but why her, why now? After how hard she’d worked…To build up her reputation as an aerial warrior, to perform her duties to her own standards…To tame the wild-yet-gentle mech who had captured her spark. And just when everything was going right…

This had to happen.

If she had arms –and they had corporeal bodies- she would punch one of those aliens square in the face.

Of course, if there’s a way, she’ll find it.

Stranger things have happened, after all.
